C. W. McConkie Dies in S. L. Funeral Today

MAESER--Charles William McConkie, 83, former resident of Vernal died in a Salt Lake hospital Sunday at 8 a.m. of pneumonia. Funeral services were conducted today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. in the Maeser Ward Chapel.

Mr. McConkie was born December 18, 1869 in Marmaton, Bourbon County, Kansas, the second child of George Willson and Susan Ann Smith McConkie. When four years old, his father moved from Kansas to Salt Lake City. The family then moved to Tooele County for two years and moved to Mona, Juab County where they lived for four years. The family moved from Mona to Moab in August 1884.

Mr. McConkie was married to Viola Roberson at Moab on March 15, 1892. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Endowment House on April 11, 1894. Mrs. McConkie died two years ago.

On November 13, 1893, at Moab, he was ordained a High Priest by Francis A. Hammond, president of San Juan Stake and was set apart as First counselor to Mons Peterson, bishop of Moab Ward, in which capacity he served for three years. The Third member of the bishopric was John Holyoak. He and Bishop Perterson both survive him and until his death it was the oldest bishopric in the Church.

The McConkie family moved to Vernal in July of 1913 where they have since made their home. During the latter years of his life prior to 1949, he spent his time in the mission field in the Central States Mission serving 13 short term missions. He baptized thirty-four persons into the church. He has been an active priesthood worker throughout his life.

Surviving are the following children: Rueben A., Brigham, E., George W., Charles Virtus and Mrs. Clark (Edna) Jones, all of Vernal; M. Dewey, Mrs. George (Martha) Osborne and Mrs. Floyd (Zina) McNeill, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Forest (Ethel) Goodrich and Mrs. Darrell (Edith) Goodrich, Tridell. There are also the following brothers and sisters surviving: John L. McConkie, Vernal; Wilford W., Roosevelt; Oscar W., Mrs. Etta Odekirk and Mrs. Mary Farnsworth, Salt Lake City; William Russell and Mrs. Emma Dalton, Moab; Mrs. Ida Wilson, California and Mrs. Edith Mickelson, El Paso, Texas. There are also forty-eight grandchildren and fifty-eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. McConkie has been living with his son Dewey in Salt Lake City for the past year and a half. Before that he lived for four years with his son George in Vernal.

Burial is in the Maeser Cemetery.
