He completed his law degree at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1971, presenting a thesis on the indirect amparo in civil matters. His judicial career began shortly after his graduation, and he held various roles in the Mexican legal system, including Judicial Officer, Project Secretary, and First Secretary at the First District Court in Civil Matters in the then Federal District. From 1985 to 1994, Castañón León served as a minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation. He contributed to important legal decisions during his tenure, initially working in the Third Chamber before moving to the Second Chamber in 1986. He retired on January 1, 1995, due to the Judicial Power Constitutional Reform approved that year, which brought changes to the composition of the Supreme Court. After he retired from the Supreme Court, Castañón León became president of the Superior Court of Justice of the State of Chiapas, serving from 1995 to 2001. In 2008, Governor Juan Sabines Guerrero appointed him as Secretary General of Government in Chiapas, a position he held until 2013. He also represented the state government in Mexico City during his career. Castañón León passed away on April 19, 2024.
