Cerrenner's parents, Ludwig Zerrenner and Amalia Minnor immigrated to New York in 1841, marrying a few months later. William was the oldest of five children. His father died in 1861 and by this time, according to his obituary, he had joined a relative out west, working on a farm. Later he joined the Indiana Infantry, Union Army. He married Teresa Gucker and had five children while living near his mother in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, Teresa Gucker Zerrenner left him widowed in 1885, with three teen-agers and two infants. Cerrenner, by that time a "sea-faring" man, married Lizzie Walther (d. 1895), then, Wilhemina Lendhold Klauss (d. 1905). After Wilhemina's death of tuberculosis, he moved to New Jersey, still working for a shipping company. In 1907, he married a widow, Salome MULLER Eisleitner, and lived in Hudson County, New Jersey. A few years before he died, Salome and William moved to New Brunswick, where he spent his final years. No one knows why he preferred the "Cerrenner" spelling rather than the "Zerrenner spelling his family used. "C" and "Z" may be interchangeable in German pronunciation.
