Clifford Small, 84, Pierre, formerly of Blunt, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at his home at ParkWood in Pierre.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre with prayer and Masonic services there at 7 p.m.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 20, at the Blunt United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blunt.

Memorials can be directed to OAHE Inc., 706 N. Euclid Ave., Pierre.

Clifford Small was born Dec. 5, 1915, in Cavour to Dorr and Cecil (Teets) Small. In 1918 they moved southeast of Blunt where Cliff grew up and attended country school. He worked at various jobs until 1938 when he purchased the Texaco station and bulk oil company in Blunt.

Cliff was united in marriage with Eunice Suhn of Harrold in Pierre on March 7, 1941. Shortly after they were married, they traveled to California for a second honeymoon and ended up staying for four years while Cliff worked for Lockheed, building planes during World War II. Cliff and Eunice returned to Blunt in 1945.

In 1946 Cliff, his brother Harlan, his brother-in-law Charles Hoover, and Russell Hoover built and then operated Blunt Livestock Auction. Also during this time Cliff and brothers Donald and Harlan contracted and built roads in Hughes and Sully counties. Cliff, Harlan, Charles, and Russell operated the sale barn until 1956. Cliff remained a cattle order buyer until his death.

Another interest in his life during the 1970s was raising and selling blue heeler pups.

Cliff was a member of Blunt Masonic Lodge No. 72 for 59 years and the Blunt Senior Citizens Center. He was a past member of the Blunt School Board and a charter member of the Blunt Rodeo Club. He was a faithful supporter of the Blunt United Methodist Church.

He loved reminiscing with relatives, friends, and neighbors. His greatest pride was his family, especially his great-grandchildren. For them he wrote and dedicated a book of his life's experiences so they would know "The Good Years, the Bad Years, and the In-Between Years."

Cliff is survived by his wife Eunice of Pierre; two sons, Terry Small and his wife Anita of Aberdeen and Craig Small of Denver, Colo.; three daughters, Karen Wyly and her husband Mack of Fort Pierre, Susan Earley and her husband Bob of Boise, Idaho, and Stacy Small of Pierre, eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Small and his wife Eleanor of Sioux Falls and Keith Small and his wife Lea of Denver; a sister, Helen Jean Hoover of Onida, and a sister-in-law, Marge Small of Blunt.

Cliff was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harlan Small, and a brother-in-law, Charles Hoover.
