Lorine (Purnell) Minor, 92, demonstrated grace in death and tenacious love in life. Born in Kilmichael/Springhill Community Mississippi, she was the third of seven children born to Peter G. Purnell and Eliza Herron Purnell. Three brothers predeceased her, McKinley Purnell (Cleveland OH), Isaiah Purnell (Winona MS) and Vernon Purnell (Temecula CA). She is the widow of Curtis H. Minor Sr. and leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved son Curtis H. Minor, Jr., daughter, Attorney Cynthia A. Minor, son in love, Attorney Dock McDowell Jr. (Nashville TN) the apple of her eye, granddaughter, Attorney Dallin A. McDowell (Atlanta GA) brother, Henry Purnell (View Park CA) sisters, Deola Lyles (Milwaukee WS), Annie Purnell Sullivan (Brookhaven MS), sisters in love, Theresa Purnell (View Park, CA), Constance Purnell (Temecula CA), Carolyn Purnell (Winona MS) and god-daughter, Attorney Barbara Bolling Williams (Gary IN). She leaves a vast extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, 'babies' and friends who will miss her feasts and feisty nature. Ms. Minor graduated from Alcorn University in 1948 and received her M.S. from Purdue University. She was the first African American Extension Agent in Lake County and created 4H clubs all over Gary. She taught in both the Chicago and Gary Community School Corporations 'Roosevelt High School' until her retirement. A faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church, she belonged to the Women's Fellowship, Village Keepers and Rebecca Circle. Having received more accolades and accommodations than space allows, but none so cherished as being called "Friend". An avid quilter, gardener, painter, baker and traveler, she was reputed to be the best armchair NBA coach in the league. She also dedicated herself to service as an active member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. for 73 years. Visitation will be held October 9 from 1-8 PM at Guy & Allen Funeral Home 2959 W. 11th Ave. Gary IN. Omega Rho Services 4-5 PM and Family Hour 5-6 PM. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday October 10 at 11AM at the Trinity Missionary Baptist Church 1831 Virginia St. Gary IN. Interment will follow immediately at the Evergreen Cemetery in Hobart IN.
