Darwin V. "Shadow" Adkins, age 84, of North Platte, died January 31, 2011 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center . Shadow was born on October 22, 1926 in North Platte to Arlie and Mollie (Boggs) Adkins.

Shadow attended North Platte High School before entering the U.S. Navy at age 17 to serve in WWII. After his discharge from the Navy Shadow returned and worked on a pipeline operation. In 1950, he joined the Air Force where he worked as a supply manager. He won numerous trophies playing ping pong while in the service. He retired from the military in 1976 after 28 years in the service. He returned to North Platte where he bartended part time at the House Bar.

Shadow had numerous memberships, including the Eagles, the Moose, the VFW, the American Legion and the Elks. Loved playing pool and he competed regularly in the local pool leagues. He also bowled, and enjoyed playing golf.

Survivors include his companion of 23 years, Arlene Chamberlain of North Platte; daughters, Linda (Orlen) Stauffer of Virginia, Patricia Canaday of Bakersfield, CA, and Debbie (Gary) Weatherly of Santa Rosa, CA; sons, Michael "Pepper" (Kathy) Dotson of North Platte, Jarred Adkins of Connecticut, Ricky Adkins of Santa Rosa, CA; a brother Jarred (Lois) Adkins of Omaha; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents. A memorial has been established to the American Heart Association.
