My maternal grandmother had been doing genealogy since the 70s or 80s. Inherited boxes and boxes of paperwork and a hefty GEDCOM file which I imported to Ancestry.com and have been working on.

My paternal lineage however was not known well at all and I have been working to research my lineal ascendants.

I mainly work with FamilySearch, I like the unified tree everyone can collaborate and refine. I do like to use Ancestry as well though as it contains a lot of personal documents and first hand knowledge but can have a tendency to spread some misinformation since corrections are only local to your personal tree.
