My Dad died when I was 6 and Mom never remarried. She raised three kids on a waitress' salary. Mom always worked hard and was a very independent person. When her and her brother Carl Reeves Howard were growing up they lived in the Atlanta orphanage for a time as so many children did during the depression. My grandmother was raising them by herself and during the depression the orphanage took children in to make sure they had food. Parents could get them back when they were on their feet again. It was hard on all involved. Mom had Ronald 1946, a set of twins that she lost between Ron and I , Annette 1955, and Keith 1956 who was a twin. She lost his twin, a little girl and remained restricted to the bed for 7 months of her pregnancy. I admire my Mom for her strength in carrying on after my Dad died. She worked hard for what she got, never with govt. assistance. I'm proud of our upbringing and I am proud of her.
