Sophie Louise Thorn, 99, of Harrold, South Dakota, died April 1, 2012 in Pierre, South Dakota at Maryhouse.

Funeral services were Thursday, April 5, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Harrold. Burial followed at Medicine Hill Cemetery, Harrold.

Sophie was born on June 11, 1912 to Ernest and Bertha (Liebschwager) Hoffman in Douglas County, SD. Sophie was raised in the Harrold community. She met and married Enos Thorn on December 23, 1933. Sophie and Enos were dedicated farmers in the area. In November of 1934, they welcomed their first son Jerald. He was followed by a sister, Janice in December of 1935, Annette in February of 1937, Leslie in May of 1938, and Betty Jean in September of 1942.

Sophie and her husband Enos homesteaded North of Harrold, until her husband's passing when Sophie moved into town. Sophie was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church Community, as well as the Farmers Union Program, Neighborhood Extension, and the Lutheran Ladies Aide. Sophie enjoyed spending her free time with her grandkids, sharing with them her love of cooking. She also relished gardening and quilting. She dedicated much of her retired time creating quilts for each one of her grandchildren and quilting table runners and centerpieces. Sophie shaped many people's lives within her family and her community with her patience and strong work ethics.

Sophie is survived by her daughters: Janice Englehart of Pierre and Annette Lambert of San Jose, California; daughter-in-law, Pat Thorn of Pierre; 17 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Wilbur (Marlene) Hoffman of Harrold and sister-in–law, Ann Hoffman of Custer.

Sophie was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Bertha Hoffman; her husband, Enos Thorn; three children, Jerald Thorn, Leslie Thorn, and Betty Thorn and her brother, Elmer Hoffman.
