Kaye Lorraine (Tumelson) Wilson Ewing's Note (kwing - manager of this Memorial):

As can be seen below, the Anderson County Kansas Family Stories and History says that George was born March 6, 1831 - a date which is, apparently, also noted on George's gravestone (only George's Date of Death and apparent Age at Death can be easily seen on the picture of the gravestone).

On the other hand, the gravestone also clearly says, "November 10, 1873 Aged 78 Years." In order for George to be 78 at the time of his death in 1873, his year of birth would have been 1795.

If George was actually born in 1795, he would have been 62 years old at the time of his marriage to Margaret and 73 years old at the time of the birth of his last child - Lillie Jane - in 1868.

George V. Duston was born in England on March 6, 1831.

He was a sea captain and the time of his arrival in this country is unknown.

In about 1857 he married Margaret Lillie Setter(or Hudnell) in Burlington, Iowa. Margaret Lillie was born in 1830 in Martin Township, Anderson County, Ks. Two children were born to them in Burlington, Rosa Ann Duston, born September 20, 1858, and Joseph James Duston, born in 1861.

Sometime between 1861 and 1864, the family moved to Anderson County, where George began farming. The location of his property is listed as the (difficult to read but is either northwest or southwest) quarter of Section 24, Township 20, Range 20, containing 160 acres.

Two more children were born to George and Margaret Lillie in Anderson County, Emiline Duston, born in 1864 and Lillie Jane Duston, born in 1868. In late 1873, George V. Duston passed away in Walker Township, Anderson County, Kansas.

On November 11, 1874, Margaret Lillie Duston married Ishum Charles Hudnell at her home. I. C. Hudnell was born in Kentucky in 1835 and moved to Kansas as a small child. He was married to Sarah Risen on September 11 (year is unreadable) and they had two children, Charles Hudnell, born in 1862, and Flora Hudnell, born in 1864. Charles married again, this time to Sarah Catherine Allen on April 17, 1870, in Anderson County, Kansas. They had a daughter, Sarah C. Hudnell, born 1871. Sarah Catherine Allen was born in Anderson County in 1840 and she died circa 1872. Ishum Charles Hudnell died in September 1876.

At the age of 47, on July 3, 1877, Margaret Lillie Setter Duston Hudnell again married, this time to a widower, John Bell, in her home in Garnett. John Bell was born in 1815. He had six children from his previous marriage, George Bell, Joseph Bell, William Bell, Ellen Bell (Crawford), Sarah Bell (Hardy), who died prior to 1899, and Jennie Bell (Wright). John Bell died at his home on April 13, 1899 and is buried in the Garnett Cemetery next to his first wife.

For the third time Margaret Lillie was a widow. George V. Duston had provided for her and their children in his will and John Bell had also made provisions for her. John had bought the shares of property that George had left to his children, Rosa Duston Springston, Joseph James Duston, Emiline, and Lillie Jane and John in turn left that property to Margaret Lillie. John's other property consisted of 38 acres in Section 24, Township 20, Range 20, and 40 acres in Section 16, Township 20, Range 21, and Lots 3 and 4 in Block 65 in Garnett. The property was equally divided among his six children.

Only one of George and Margaret Lillie's children remained in Garnett, Lillie Jane. On January 5, 1903, she married Arthur J. Douglass in Garnett. Rosa Ann married John Thomas Springston on May 17, 1876, in Garnett, where they remained until about 1885 when they headed west to homestead in the Palouse country of Idaho. Joseph James Duston also headed west to Elgin, Oregon. It is not known whether he married or if he remained in Oregon. Emiline (Emma) moved to Omaha, Neb., and it is not known whether she married or not.

Margaret Lillie Setter (or Hudnall) Duston Bell died in Peck, Idaho, in 1908 while visiting her daughter, Rosa Ann.
