Lee was the son of William E. and Julia Lou (Crayne) Sullivan. After his father's death, he became chief operating officer of Eli Bridge Company, a family business which builds Ferris Wheels and later the Scrambler and other carnival rides.

He married Nell Griffiths and had three children with her: a daughter Peggy; and two sons: William known as "Liam" during his career as a television actor; and Lee, Jr., who worked in the family manufacturing business and is now Chairman of the Board.
