Funeral services for Arthur Raymond Schimke, age 97, of Watertown, SD will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 in the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Wessington Springs, SD. Rev. Don Grubb will officiate. Music will be provided by Fallie Beers, organist, and Arthur's grandchildren. Arthur passed away on Friday, April 3, 2009 at his residence.
Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Wessington Springs. Honorary pallbearers will be Arthur's home care providers: Jan Brown, Donna Schneider, Jan Butts, Don Helwig, Stacy and Kamal Mjoun, Annabelle Kingslien, Becky Davis, and Brooke Schwartz. Active pallbearers will be: Steve Dammann, Kamal Mjoun, Scott Andersen, Dale Johnson, Curt Weigel, and Tim Wegner.
Visitation will be in the Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and in the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Wessington Springs on Tuesday prior to services. The family is requested to meet at the church on Tuesday by 1:30 p.m. for family gathering and prayer service.
Arthur was born on January 25, 1912, in Wessington Springs, SD to Nathaniel and Mary (Puepke) Schimke. He attended Wessington Springs High School. He farmed in Jerauld County for 25 years.
On November 25, 1939 Arthur married Doris Posey in the Congregational parsonage in Wessington Springs, SD. The couple lived on the farm and then moved into Wessington Springs in 1963. Arthur was employed as head custodian for Wessington Springs Independent School District for 14 years. In the fall of 1977, the couple moved to Watertown where Arthur was employed as a custodian for Norwest Bank until he retired.
He was a member of the Congregational Church and Senior Citizens Center in Watertown. Arthur was a former member of the Promenaders and Diamond Square Dance clubs. He also enjoyed music and sang in the men's choir of the Congregational Church in Wessington Springs. He was a good husband and father. His greatest love was that of his family and the precious time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Arthur is survived by two daughters: Joyce Lagge of Flandreau, SD and Joanne Andersen of Watertown, SD; one brother, Donald (Delores) Schimke of Wessington Springs, SD; one sister, Hannah "Jennie" Cleveland of Wessington Springs, SD; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; his parents; two brothers: Walter and Milton; and an infant sister, Esther.
