Guy Thomas Garrett, Sr., 49, of Walnut, MS, died Tuesday evening, October 28, at Tippah County Hospital in Ripley, MS. The husband of Judy Boyd Garrett, who survives, he was a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in Tippah County for 15 years and the Chairman of the North Tippah County School Board.

Mr. Garrett was born December 28, 1953, in Tippah County, the son of Ruby J. Mullins Garrett and the late Guy Hershel Garrett. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in both Vietnam and Desert Storm. Mr. Garrett was a Union Steward for the Mississippi Rural Mail Carriers Union where he served as President for four years. He was a member of the Adams Masonic Lodge 264 of Middleton, the Scottish Rite, and the Eastern Star. He was Grand Chaplain for the York Rite in Tennessee and a Shriner.

As an ordained Baptist minister, he served several area churches and was also a chaplain for the Tippah county Sheriff's Department. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Walnut, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and a Training Union teacher.

Services are 11:00 a.m. Friday October 31 at Harmony Baptist Church in Walnut with Bruce Jolly officiating and Brian Tatum assisting. Burial is in Harmony Baptist Cemetery. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar is in charge of arrangements.

In addition to his wife, whom he married November 25, 1972, and his mother, survivors include one daughter Rachel; one son Guy Thomas Garrett, Jr., and his wife Shelly, and two grandchildren Seth and Stephan Cundiff, all of Walnut, MS.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Gideons International or the Shriner's.
