Hattie Mae Wynn was born in Booneville, Mississippi on April 8, 1916 to the late Mr. Charlie Gardner and Mrs. Marie Gardner. She later moved with her family to McNairy County, Selmer, Tennessee, where she made her home until her death on July 13, 1984 at Regional Hospital in Jackson, Tennessee, after a short illness.

She accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Willis Chapel CME Church and later united with her husband at Roaches' Chapel United Methodist Church. She not only served her church, but she also served many churches and a musician and choir director. She received her formative education in Booneville, Mississippi and Selmer, Tennessee school systems and graduated from Allen-White High School in Whiteville, Tennessee. She held a Bachelor's and Master's Degree and had done post graduate work on her Doctoral Degree, and was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

She was the originator of "Mrs. Wynn's Religious Services" (for the sick and shuts) that aired on the local Radio Station WDTM in Selmer each Sunday morning. She was a veteran teacher, having served the McNairy County School System as an elementary teacher and high school instructor for more than 40 years, until her retirement in 1981. She served under seven school superintendents.

She was the widow of the late Delmar R. Wynn who preceded her in death some years ago. Those who shared and cherished the beautiful memories of a well spent life are: a devoted mother, Mrs. Marie O. Newberry Gardner of Selmer; one sister Mrs. Augusta Jackson of Gary, Indiana; two brothers, Reverend Alvin Gardner of Palo Alto, California and Hershel Gardner of San Jose, California; one aunt, Mrs. Arleta Turner of Baldwyn, Mississippi; one uncle, James Newberry of Baldwyn, Mississippi; ten sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law; five 'devoted' friends, Reverend & Mrs. George Barnes Sr., Mrs. Cordelia Wanton, Mrs. Betty Barnes, all of Selmer, and Mrs. Anna M. Walker of St Petersburg, Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
