Union Civil War Officer. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he volunteered to serve with the Union Army when the Civil War began. He enlisted for three months' service and was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant with the 10th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Cassilly eventually became the Regimental Quarter-Master when he was mustered out after his short term of enlistment expired. He then reenlisted and was transferred to the Missouri Infantry and commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel with the Benton Cadets under General John C. Fremont. The Benton Cadets were raised and organized in Cincinnati, Ohio for three months' service in September of 1861. He returned to Cincinnati in January of 1862, was honored for his service by the soldiers from his regiment, and was presented with a gold mounted meerschaum pipe. On January, 18, 1862, Cassilly was appointed as Lieutenant Colonel of the 69th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was later assigned as the Military Mayor of Franklin, Tennessee in June of 1862. He soon returned to his regiment and was promoted to Colonel and as the acting commander of the regiment replacing Colonel Lewis Davis Campbell on August 9, 1862. At the Battle of Stones River during the last few days of 1862, he commanded the regiment as part of the XIV Corps and was severely wounded from a gunshot through his arm. Cassilly later resigned because of complications from his wound. He returned to Cincinnati and later died at College Hill in 1888.
