Los Angeles Real Estate Broker and Developer. Philanthropist. Howard W. Mills was one of the founders of Occidental College in Los Angeles, and Pomona College in Claremont, in 1887. Son of Lewis and Sarah (Este) Mills, he left New Jersey and headed west to Indianapolis in 1849. He then moved to Minneapolis, where he was successful in the lumber and real estate business. He came to California in 1870, first to Santa Barbara, and in 1874 he started the real estate brokerage of Pomeroy and Mills in Los Angeles, in partnership with Abram E. Pomeroy. His firm sold the property where Los Angeles City Hall is located, and he was instrumental in planning and expanding the cities of Long Beach and Hollywood. Later, he was the senior partner in the brokerage firm of Mills, Crawford, Pauly, and Clapp, with his son-in-law, Albert B. Clapp. He was a deacon in the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles for over 30 years. First wife was Caroline (Freeman) Mills. Second wife was Margaret J. Mills.
