Alvin Charles Panaro of Florence, formerly of Browns Mills, passed away peacefully, Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, in Marcella Nursing Home, with his children at his bedside. He was 92.

Mr. Panaro was born in St. Benedict, Pa., to the late Michael and Nellie Cowan Panaro.

He served his country with honor in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Alabama from 1944 - 1945.

With only an eighth grade education, Alvin had many accomplishments and enjoyed many hobbies, including woodworking, photography, sailing, building and flying radio controlled airplanes. He was a talented self-taught artist.

He was a member and past president of the Florence Kiwanis Club and a former Boy Scout leader.

Along with his wife, they operated the family business, Florence Greenhouse for seven years. He also retired as supervisor of building and grounds for the Florence Township Board of Education with 20 years of dedicated service.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Susan Panaro in 2012, and siblings, Daniel and Robert Panaro, Helen Henderson, Rosella and Ruth Panaro and Lois Pieretti.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Richard Chiemingo of Burlington; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Patty Panaro of Florence; grandchildren, Scott Chiemingo, Anthony Panaro, David Havens, Joseph Havens (Brandi) and Daniel Havens; great-grandchildren, Emma, Owen, Scarlet, Angel, Daniel, Gabriella and Julianna; sister, Betty Jean Perino; brothers, Edward Panaro and Rev. David Panaro; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Koschek and Porter Funeral Directors, 1115 Hornberger Avenue, Roebling. Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Burlington.
