In Joseph's April 17, 1963 obituary in the Jersey Journal, its reported that he was an Army veteran of both World Wars. He had recently retired as a mechanic with the Central Railroad of New Jersey.

A second obituary from April 18 states his brother George and Charles also fought in World War I. Joseph was first in the battle on the Meuse and later the Argonne Forest in France.

He never married, was a great bowler, had a long good, clean work record and gave to many charities over the years.
