Although her stone indicates she was born in 1913, census and marriage records show that she was born in 1903∼Daughter of Agness (Vivian) Orviss Riddle.
Gladys married Lionel Hampton on November 11, 1936 and served as Lionel's business manager and career advisor. Later in life she was involved in the construction of a housing project in her name, which is known as the Gladys Hampton Houses, in New York City, NY.
It was Lionel's wishes for his wife's ashes to be placed next to his grave. However, legal problems existed (no heirs to request the transfer) and Gladys' ashes will remain at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery. There is a centoph for Gladys at Woodlawn Cemetery, New York, where Lionel is buried.
