HURON — Former Beadle County Sheriff Tom Beerman died Tuesday at Huron Regional Medical Center.

Beerman was 65.

A graduate of Huron High School, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam in the Air Force. After returning home to Huron, he worked for OK Tire before starting his law enforcement career as a police officer in 1976.

Beerman was elected sheriff in 1986, and served for 24 years, retiring early because of health reasons in February 2010.

As he campaigned for re-election in the 2006 race, he shared some of his law enforcement philosophy with voters during election forums.

He said he preferred to try to get along with people rather than being heavy-handed by being in uniform and wearing a gun.

Beerman said he always abided by his strict mother's words of advice as he was growing up in Huron. Treat people right, she'd tell him, "and I've always lived by that."

His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, with burial in St. Martin Cemetery.

Visitation with family present will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
