Author. Granville was a writer of prose and poetry and he gained a wide reputation for his sonnets. Over a period of several years, he published much of his poetry in the North American Review, Harper's Magazine, The Nation, and South Carolina and Georgia poetry society publications. He was a member of the Poetry Society of South Carolina where he was awarded first prize in a contest conducted by the Poetry Society of Georgia in 1930 for his "Doris", "Posthumous" and "Night Piece" also were prize winners in other contests, along with "Two Flowers:, "Vision" of Youth" and "Challenge". In 1936 he published a novel called " Invincible Surmise". In 1934, he gave up his position on the Citadel faculty to realize his long cherished ambition to write a novel. Two years later "Invincible Surmise" was published, and Mr. Smith returned to the faculty at the lower school of Porter Military academy.
